Coming Home

Anodyne’s mind raced with possibility. Eagerly he began to grin. “Better hold on Sylum, we are going back to Hollow.” Anodyne yelled as he began to swirl his hands overhead. Sylum gripped to the chunk of land. His hands dug deep into its soils as he solidified rock around himself to hold him in. Anodyne called out as his spell came to conclusion. “Better watch out Xarius because we’re fucking coming for you.” His hands collided and the protective bubble enveloped them before they both disappeared. Sylum was preparing for the ride to be rough as it had been on the way in, but Anodyne appeared to be in a hurry. He forced them through the universe hop as fast as he could. His eyes unblinking, he watched as the chaos of their environment lashed out at the protective bubble. Vibrant colours flared as the opposing forces collided, lighting up the maddened determination that was consuming Anodyne. Sylum struggled to remain upon the land. With each violent explosion that happened he could feel the land breaking away a little more. “Anodyne, maybe we slow down a little,” Sylum cried out over the cacophony of increasingly large explosions; his hands slipping from their embrace, struggling to stay on. He clawed his way onto the land as it fell apart. “Anodyne, I am going to fall. You need to slow down.” Anodyne continued to stare unblinking as he leant ever closer to the protective barrier; the heat bubbling his skin and drying his eyes. Sylum continued to fall backwards despite his best efforts to remain grounded. His foot passing ever so slightly out of the barrier he felt it being torn asunder by the forces of nature. “Anodyne, I am going to die!” He screamed as his grip failed completely. Tumbling backwards towards the barrier he felt as if time was slowing, the sound of the explosions seeming drawn out and low in tone. Everything moved glacially as he fell backwards. He watched as Anodyne remained at the front, staring into the vibrant chaos that was happening spitting distance from his face. Feeling the heat grow against his back Sylum began to panic but no matter what he tried to do, nothing would come to fruition. His powers were inert while travelling with in Anodynes sphere. A slight tingling sensation ran up Sylums spine as it made contact with the barrier, a sensation that seemed to reset time and everything began to flow. He closed his eyes waiting for the inevitable, holding them as tight as he could he scrunched up his face with anticipation. “We’re here.” Anodyne said, provoking Sylum to open his eyes. Their travel having come to an end mere moment before Sylum fell into the chaos and was consumed by the raw energy. Sylum turned Anodyne around and stared into his eyes with a fury. “You ever do that again and I will kill you. I told you that I would happily fight for you, but I won’t die because of you.” Anodyne seemed to ignored Sylum. He just eagerly waited for him to finish speaking before responding. “But Sylum, we are here. Look.” Anodyne gestured behind himself, revealing an asteroid covered in crystals. Sylum drew closer. Looking over it he could see the still present visage of Anodyne’s guardian angel. “You better hope you never come out of this hysteria, otherwise I am going to fucking break you.” Sylum muttered under his breath, recognising that Anodyne would be impossible to address while in his current state. “Do you know what this is?” Sylum ran his hand across the asteroid. “A woman in rock?” He sighed with disinterest. “No, this is far more than a woman. This is my guardian angel, slowly going through the process of un-birth.” Anodyne laid his body across the asteroid, mirroring the position of his guardian angel. A glimmer of interest sparked in Sylum’s eyes. “You mean to tell me something managed to defeat your guardian angel? I don’t know a single god that would even try to attack one, let alone win.” “Oh I have no idea what caused her to fall upon this state, but she gave me some of her memories before falling to this form. So I have some understanding of what is happening.” Sylum watched as Anodyne caressed the gem stones around her face, staring almost lovingly into her eyes. “Is your plan to bring her back? Then use her help to defeat Xarius?” Sylum said as he examined the asteroid further. His eyes were drawn to the top as he heard a cracking sound. Anodyne had plunged his hand through the top of the stone around her, carving a way to her heart. Plunging his hand through her chest he bit through his lip with anticipation. As soon as Anodyne grabbed her heart he felt an overwhelming heat run through his body. His eyes turned blue as his body went into panic mode. Veins in his head started to illuminate with a vibrant purple energy. Sylum stood back from the situation, watching curiously, but cautiously. Anodyne started to turn feral and he straddled the asteroid. His feet and spare hands set wide across its surface as he centred himself above the angel’s heart. “Come now! You were once so eager to give me your secrets! Why hold back now?!” Anodyne screamed as he felt his hand slowly melding with the heart, uncertain if he was forcing his way through or if it was consuming him. “From darkness you came, unto darkness you shall return once again. Face the inevitable. Take the stride into the dark. Leave behind the secrets of your past. Give me the knowledge needed to burn the scourge that poisons my planet.” Anodyne felt pulses of energy attacking his body, growing more violent the stronger his grip became. As his mind turned soft Anodyne was filled with memories from the angel; her experiences as she developed into the being that she was before her un-birth began. “Let your life carry on through me. Let me be a vessel for your life to continue. Leave this old one behind. Become one with me.” As Anodyne finished yelling, the violence of the situation ended. The light emanating from the heart faded and the heart itself collapsed beneath Anodyne’s grip. Sylum cautiously approached as he watched vapor rise off of Anodyne’s body. “Anodyne, you still there.” Sylum asked as he tried to gain a view of Anodyne’s face. “Yes.” Anodyne answered, but as he did a female’s voice answered at the same time, un-nerving Sylum and causing him to stop in his tracks. Again, speaking with two voices Anodyne raised his head to reveal black eyes with a Stirling cross stretching the length and breadth of his eyes as pupils. “We have some business to take care of back on Hollow.” Before Sylum had a chance to ask questions he was grabbed by Anodyne and they both disappeared. As they reappeared above Hollow, Sylum felt a strange energy rippling from Anodynes body. The ripples encompassed the planet below. As it did, a series of girls voices screamed out Anodyne’s name. “The hell was that?” Sylum said reactively. “Those were my daughters, all seven, screaming for their father to return. For the ruler of their once beautiful planet to come home and cast out the usurper that holds his throne.” Sylum turned his gaze downwards as the shaking of Anodyne’s hand caught his eye. As it moved and writhed it appeared as if two hands were occupying the same space. Looking upwards he noticed Anodyne’s whole body appeared as if there were a second being occupying the same space. As he watched he could see Anodyne then the figure of the angel, before changing back again. Anodyne floated, staring at his planet. “What has he done to you? You were once so beautiful, now a disgusting mess covered with weak people.” Anodyne searched for Xarius. He could feel his presence but failed to see him. “Come out Xarius. You have something that belongs to me.” Anodyne waited for a response. A whole hour passed with no response. “Fine, we do this the loud way.” Anodyne pressed his hand against the barrier that had been keeping him separate from his world. With little effort it shattered under his hand. The once invisible energy turned into shards of glass that started to float towards the planet. * Down on the planet, Xarius sat with group of devoted followers, basking in their worship. A small speck landed on his nose, watched by those awestruck on the ground. Opening his eyes, he saw the sky was lit up like an aurora that encompassed the whole planet. “It is truly beautiful, Risen God. You do us a great honour,” a worshiper said as he gazed upwards to the sky. “I’ll ask once more. Come out Xarius. You have something that I want back.” Anodyne waited again. Xarius looked to his followers. “Remain here, I shall return shortly.” He flew out and met Anodyne and Sylum. “You look like shit Anodyne, did breaking my little barrier take its toll on you?” Xarius chuckled as he watched Anodyne twitch and spasm. Turning his head back to the planet Xarius snapped his fingers and another shimmer surrounded Hollow. “That is a shame, because they are so easy to make.” Anodyne tried his best to grin but found the uncontrollable twitches forced his face to a stern stare. “Your pathetic barrier did not do this to me, I did.” “Strange. Never took you for one to self-harm. Looks like being separate from your planet has driven you insane.” Xarius leant back against his barrier, watching with joy as Anodyne appeared to be in pain. “Oh but you couldn’t be more wrong.” Anodyne started to walk slowly towards Xarius. “Being separated from my planet cured me of my insanity, it gave me a clear mind with which I was able to see a solution to my problem.” Anodyne leant his hand on the barrier next to Xarius, once again shattering it. A spark of fear gleamed in Xarius’s eyes. “But once I merged with my angel I regained all those years of pain and suffering, bringing back the madness. A madness that fuels my powers. Now I remember what I needed to regain my strength, I have no reason to let you live. This is my planet, my home, and my play things that reside upon it. And I do not share with those weaker than me.” Xarius pushed against Anodyne, placing him at the extent of his arms reach. “You may gain power from being insane, but you took it too far Anodyne. You really think you have gotten stronger than me in such a short period of time? I think it is time I put you down you mad dog!” and he swung with all his might. His fist collided to no effect. Anodyne remained, twitching, and fidgeting before Xarius. “I am not some wayward deity with no direction. You can’t put me down.” Anodyne grabbed Xarius, pulling him in close. His duel voice ringing in Xarius’ ear. “I have direction, purpose, and a will power that will use your soul as a stepping stone to the stars.” With no effort Anodyne sent Xarius sailing towards to the ground. Tearing through the atmosphere, he lit up the sky; the final flourish on the already colourful sky. Curving back down he crashed through the top of his own church. “Do you hear their screams Xarius? Those are the screams of those who follow a weak deity. Let those screams fill you as I slaughter your people.” Anodyne followed with Sylum in tow, smashing another hole through the church as he stomped Xarius down into the marble flooring. “You will get a front row seat; I wouldn’t want you to miss the hope boil away in their tears as they realise that your time has come.” Dust filled the …

Born In Space

A lone boy floats in the cold of space, no older than twenty-five. Their thin, frail form covered in ice. Rapidly the ice dissolved, life coming back to the boy. As his life returned he began to suffocate, slowly dying, and returning to his limp frozen form. Freeze, defrost, repeat.Freeze, defrost, repeat.Freeze, defrost, repeat. As he comes back to life he clawed at nothing, his fists grabbing nothing, as his lungs filled with nothing. Finally, he died again, due to nothing. Defrost, fight, die, freeze, repeat.Defrost, fight, die, freeze, repeat.Defrost, fight, die, freeze, repeat. Every minute the boy lived his life, cut short by the vacuum of space. Every time he lived, he experienced it in silence. The lack of oxygen not only muting him, but clogging his ears from any sound that might find its way to him. 1,2,3,4 million years passed. Eventually the boy awoke from death, to life. One minute passed, then another. The pattern of clawing into space stopped as the boy realised he had gained the ability to breathe. His chest remained still, yet he felt no need to use his lungs. A moment of joy enveloped the boy as he rejoiced in silence, thousands of kilometres from the nearest object. The grin lowered, and panic started to set in. Once again, he clawed at space, doing so until exhaustion halted his actions. Frozen tears carved their way across his face as the reality of his position sunk in. He was stuck. He flailed outwards to no avail, nothing to grab, and nothing to move him. He slumped over, exhausted from panic. Body now limp he let himself float stationary in space. “You are the most pathetic excuse of a deity that I have ever seen.” The boy looked up, doing his best to survey his surroundings. “All the others are working with world builders, and I am stuck watching a dying worm.” “Oh no, I am going mad.” He thought to himself. “You’re not going mad, I am just invisible.” Before the boy appeared a perfect human female. Made from light she illuminated the face of the boy. He attempted to speak to her, but found he could not. “Not even speech, you truly are pathetic.” “But you can hear my thoughts?” He thought as he gazed upon her visage. The woman acted as if she were lying down, resting her chin upon her hands. “Yes, we have a direct link actually. That means I can always hear your thoughts, not that you have had many over the last few million years. You have been rather dull, that is why I have not been around.” “Who are you?” “I am your guardian angel. A better term would be baby sitter, you deities are awfully flawed and weak.” “Gods are not weaker than angels, everyone knows that.” “Deities are stronger than the angels they create. We were made by something…more than what a deity is.” “What do you mean more than a deity?” The angel grinned rolling over she floated upside down. “Do you know your name?” The boy went to answer, but had to stop themselves. “I don’t.” “Do you know where you are?” “I don’t.” “I’m not actually supposed to talk to you, I will leave you to try and remember anything from your past lives.” With that the angel disappeared. The boy remained wide eyed, his eyes darting around as he tried desperately to remember anything before his years of suffocation. The angels face reappeared by the boy’s ear. “The more you focus on what you want the quicker it will happen. You want to move, focus on it, you want to create, focus on it. Don’t let natural laws affect what you want.” With a gentle kiss on his cheek she disappeared once again. The boy steadied himself. “All I need to do is focus?” The boy focused on moving, attempting to swim through the void. His eyes closed he was determined to move. Eyes opened he looked around. “There are no landmarks, I am in a sea of nothingness. Nothing but the distant twinkles of stars, how do I tell if I have moved?” The boy said, scratching his head. “If only I had something nearby use as a way to measure movement.” The boy heard the creaking of metal, before him a row of lamp posts appeared. They twisted and turned out of the dark. Their gas lamps igniting in sequence. A lengthy line evenly spaced, disappearing off into the distance. “Don’t let the laws of nature stand in my way. I think I should start thinking differently.” The guardian angel watched on with eager eyes. “That was fast.” She said as she examined one of the lamp posts closely. “Maybe he is not as useless as I thought.” She continued. The boy focused again, this time he outstretched a leg as if he were to take a step on solid ground. His leg simply went out, around, and back to its place next to the other. “This is fine, I can do this.” Days went by, and the boy remained stationary. “Please, please say I can manage this. I can’t stay still any longer.” The boy started to cry as he moved his limbs slowly in a forward march fashion. Years went by, his eyes stared unblinking. His hands shook as he laughed. “All I have to do is focus, is that it? Because as far as I can tell I am pretty fucking focused.” The guardian angel reached out towards the boy, but she stopped as a voice resonated from within her. The voice sounded as if a wheel were to be heavy pressed through gravel. “Not again, they must learn in their own time.” The Guardian angel retracted her grasp out of fear of the words that haunted her ears. “But he will suffer.” “Then suffer he must, only the strong shall survive.” The angel remained close to the boy, but stayed out of his reaching distance. Millions of years crawled by, fervently his eyes shook in their socket. His hands ran through his hair, chunks being ripped out as blood poured from the wounds. Freezing as it contacted the cold of space. “I must be crazy, because last time I checked I had a guardian angel. A guardian angel who does NOTHING.” The boy yelled out as his voice broke in the darkness of space. “What are you guarding me from? Death? Because last time I checked I have already died, time and time again. All that has changed is I get to experience the years roll by.” The guardian angel tried to reach out once again, but once again the gravelly voice sounded in her ears. “If you touch that child, I shall force you through un-birth until the spark of my eye dwindles and fades.” “By the spark of my life I vowed to protect my child, not watch as they burn in their own insanity.” The Guardian angel stretched out her arm and placed it upon the child’s forehead. A spark of realisation jolted through his body as the angel was forced to reveal herself. Her form slowly collapsing into the shape of a hard crystal. The boy felt his body vibrate with knowledge. Touching the crystal, he acknowledged her sacrifice. But his attention drew to his new found abilities. Taking his first step, he grinned, with each step his hair regrew in part. His chest uplifted in a harrowing cackle as he ran down the line of lamp posts. Picking up speed he started to carve his way across the universe. Slowing down as he reached the end of the line he found himself face to face with the only other object he has observed. A small stone which radiated with a strange energy. “What makes you special little rock?” The boy picked it up, a repetitive pulse of energy ran through his arm. With each one the pain increased. The boy laughed as his eyes stared down with a burning passion. Blood vessels popping in them as his teeth grinded upon each other. “Is that all you have you little shit. I have suffered for eons in nothing, you are a welcome change.” He said grasping the stone with his other hand. His whole body seized as he gripped onto the stone, determined to see how much he could endure. The bones in his hand started to crack as the pulses got faster. Right as his teeth started to crack the pulses stopped, and the stone became warm. “I don’t know what you are, but I like you.” The boy said as he rubbed his fingers across the stone. “I shall keep you around strange stone. You can be the centre of my new home. With the knowledge that angel gave me it should be simple enough.” The boy released the stone and floated backwards. His eyes turning blue he started to create matter. Densely packing substance around the stone, he began the formation of his first planet. Anodynes eyes opened, Sylum stood next to him with curiosity. “You okay? You looked like you passed out once those other two left.” “Oh, I have never been better. I just remembered something very important.” “Does it help us with your goal?” “Help us? No, no this memory lets us complete it.”

The Beginning

A lone deity floats in space above a planet, malice carved into his face, as he watched another deity fly across the surface of the planet below. Cracking his knuckles, he contemplated his revenge aloud. “One day Xarius, I will return and rip your soul from your body.” Distracted by his hatred, the floating deity failed to notice another creeping up behind him. “Well what do we have here, Anodyne?” The newcomer said as he laid his hand on Andoyne’s shoulder. Anodyne jumped as he turned to see a familiar face. “In the name of Ompti. Don’t sneak up on me like that Sylum. I’m busy.” Sylum floated below Anodyne, forging a small chunk of land beneath their feet. “Come stand, I hate floating in space. It makes me uncomfortable.” Anodyne slowly lowered to the new-found land beneath his feet, gently lowering himself, he stood upon the land below him as he continued to stare. Sylum stepped forward and stood shoulder to shoulder with Anodyne, looking down to the planet below. “So, who is that?” “Xarius. He is a long story and an impossibility that I do not understand. To top it all off he is the most powerful deity I have had the displeasure of crossing paths with.” Sylum grinned, drawing swords from thin air, he lowered himself into an aggressive stance. “Need me to take him out for you?” “I meant what I said, he is far beyond you. Not even with the help of the others could we take him down.” Sylum’s poise fell as he turned to Anodyne. “What do you mean, the others? Did you call others here today?” Finally breaking his concentration Anodyne turned to face Sylum. “My planet has been stolen by a deity that could kill me by just thinking it. Do you think I was going to sit around and wait for him to leave?” Turning away from the planet, Anodyne watched a crackling purple energy appear in space. “No, I went and I found some help.” Raising an eyebrow, Sylum turned his head to see the newcomers. A fur covered hand passed through the crackling thunder, quickly followed by another. A face started to appear, horned, masked, and wide eyed. Dropping their head into full view, long brown hair started to float in the vacuum of space. Their fur covered torso made a full appearance, but there was no sign of legs as the upper body started to float down to the small island Sylum made. With another crackle, a second half that would fit the newcomer, stepped through and followed the same descent. The crackling energy dissipated as the legs stood on land, the torso following the same path, rested above them. Sylum grinned, running his hand between the torso and legs of the masked newcomer. “Sylum, quit it. This is a friend of mine. Vure, this is Sylum, he was the second deity I met in this endless Eternaverse. Fortunately, he liked me enough not to kill me.” Retracting his hand from in-between Vure, Sylum presented it for a handshake. Vure’s eyes darted between Anodyne and Sylum’s hand. Reluctantly they met with Sylum’s hand. Locking his grip, Sylum spun and tossed the top half of Vure from the island. As he did, he laughed with a snide chuckle. “I am impressed you have managed to alter your form, but this split body is going to get you killed.” Sylum continued to laugh as the top half of Vure disappeared in the blink of an eye. He tried to turn back to the legs, but his jaw was struck with an incredible force. Nearly losing his footing, he managed to look back up at Vure as they re-orientated their top half above their legs. “Vure can blink either of their halves to the other. It has actually been quite useful in more than a few situations before.” Sylum was not paying attention, his eyes had lit up with a flame. “No one fucking hits me and gets away with it.” Sylum turned to Vure, shifting his stance he readied to strike, hoping to win the fight with fear before he had to act. Vure did nothing, they stood still, all their emotions hidden by the mask. Sylum moved forward to strike with all his might, but right before he thought he was going to make contact, his fist stopped suddenly. He could feel a hand holding his, but he could not see anyone. “Come on out Light, punching Sylum was funny but I have a lot to catch you all up on.” A grinning, pale face with darkened eye sockets emerged from the space in-between Sylum and Vure. Her head adorned with a golden veil which illuminated her golden eyes. With one hand she let go of Sylum’s fist, with the other she blew a kiss. Sylum recoiled as the image of Light shook his nerve. “I was the one that hit you, just a light tap. But if you raise a hand to Vure again, I will lay you to waste.” Sylum watched confused as Light’s eyes changed from golden, to a green. Her stance changing as they did. Not understanding, he stood down. Crossing his arms, he looked back to Anodyne. “If you three have finished I would like to direct your attention to Xarius, know by those on Hollow as the risen deity, or the deity of hope.” Anodyne turned and gestured to Hollow. Everyone looked down and watched as Xarius drastically changed the landscape of the planet. The seas were tamed, and the beasts that lurked within slain. The temperamental weather changed to four mild seasons, and the miserable Holites were all given a smile as Xarius flew by repairing their broken world. “As you can see, this imposter has taken my planet and I am powerless to take it back. Even with the help of you three we could not take it back.” Anodyne turned his attention to Light. “Well actually we could if Light could control her eyes.” Sylum played with his hand as he felt for broken bones. “No way am I going to rely on a skitzo god for a battle. But that is beside the point, why gather us if we can’t do anything to take back Hollow for you?” Light pointed to Sylum. “The ape has a point, why are we here?” Anodyne grinned, stretching his arms forward he cracked his knuckles. “Let me show you what we are going to do.” Circling his arms at full extension, Anodyne brought them back together in front of himself, clapping. A sphere passed through everyone and surrounded the island they all stood on. Space outside the bubble started to blur and shift into strange colours. A reverberating electrical sound surrounded the sphere, getting louder and louder as they went. The swirling, coloured, blurs started to fade, and they found themselves above different planet. The sphere faded and Anodyne began to speak. “When my planet was taken from me I did everything to get it back. I fought till my body failed me. I went into the expanse of the Eternaverse looking for a way to get back at Xarius. But everything was a dead end. Everything except one. I found that worship from a planet lead to a great increase of power. Before you is my second planet. This is Dolor.” Everyone looked down at the planet below them. They peered down to the surface of the green planet, watching as those who occupied it drew sword and shield. Powerful magics coursing through the veins of others. Light looked to Anodyne. “It is a fantasy world? This was always my preferred planet, it was going to be the first planet I built.” “I always loved fantasy worlds. They always felt so alive, so limited. Never lasting long before the age of machines kills the soul of the planet and drains the magic. Leaving nothing but man residing upon an empty shell of a planet racing the clock of death.” Everyone turned to Vure, as they finished speaking, and stood looking around at everyone staring at them. “How about we don’t all look at me. Let’s all look at Anodyne as he tells us why he made a new planet.” “How about how you made a new planet, I thought you couldn’t create sentient life?” Sylum added. Anodyne grimaced. “Thank you Sylum for bringing attention to my shortcomings. No, I can’t create individual sentient life. But I can create a planet in full motion. This universe is only weeks old, but to them. They have thousands of years of history, they have no idea they were made so recently.” Light looked puzzled. “What do you mean?” Anodyne sighed. “There are two main ways of making planets, taking time and hand crafting everything from scratch. Or by focusing and spawning a planet into existence that is fully developed with life already on it. The latter requires less skill but is much quicker.” “I fail to see what you are saying, they both sound like the same thing to me.” Light said cautiously. “You need to stop viewing planets as something that requires skill to create. Alternatively, you can look at it as if you have been given a spell that allows a planet to be spawned into existence. All of its landmarks and overall tech level of the planet is created at random by the spell.” “I think I understand now.” Light said as she scratched at her head in uncertainty. “I thought this universe felt cold.” Sylum watched as ice would form on his skin and melt away. “I guess the stars have not warmed up this universe yet.” Sylum continued “Not yet, but they will. As for your question Vure, I have created a new world to allow us all to be worshipped on. We shall become the highest seated deities in a pantheon populated with lesser deities. We shall harvest this praise and become stronger than Xarius ever thought possible.” Anodynes eyes lit up blue as his arms raised by his sides, his voice now echoing around the other three. “This time I imprison him in my hell, I will ensure a thousand eternities go by before he tries to escape a second time.” Fire erupted around the island as Anodyne began to yell. “I will boil his blood, and flay his skin eternally. Before I finally extract his soul and store it as a reminder, that only strength allows us deities to advance in this Eternaverse. An Eternaverse that he is not strong enough to live in. The flames calmed and Anodyne returned to the island. Sylum grinned at the sight of Anodyne lifting from the ground. “It has been a while since I have seen your spiritual state, are you finally coming back to your former glory?” Hands shaking, Anodyne grinned. “I forgot what it felt like, Xarius may very well be the thing that pushes me back to who I need to be to defeat him.” “May I interject?” Vure said, raising their hand slightly. Everyone turned to them as they waited for them to speak up. “As you know Anodyne, Light and I are not the most experienced gods. We are very young and have yet to even create our own planets. Let alone explore the Eternaverse, or our spiritual forms. I can’t speak for light but I don’t actually know what these terms mean.” Sylum and Anodyne chuckled. Anodyne looked to Sylum, Sylum raised his hands in protest and gestured for Anodyne to continue. “I forget how young you two are sometimes, it is fine. The Eternaverse is the term we use for the seemingly endless expanse of dimensions and universes that exist. I can create my own multiverse, leave it, then visit another’s. We can then both leave ours and explore the universe that holds these multiverses. The stepping stones continue upwards to more universes that hold clusters of smaller ones. Unfortunately, anyone who …

He Won’t Mind

Vure glided down from space, descending to the surface of Dolor. Their feet pressed down into the firm soil, head tilted back, they breathed deeply, savouring the smell. Walking forward they turned their palms skyward, running their fingers through the leaves of the waist high bushes. “This planet seems too beautiful for Anodyne to have created it.” Vure said in disbelief as their eyes angled upwards to the large mountain range in the distance. The clouds hiding the upper most peaks. Flocks of birds flew overhead, dappling the ground light from the two suns above. The plains around Vure stretched out in all directions, covered in lush bushes spotted with a variety of berries that gave a flair of colour to an otherwise green landscape. Vure’s motion halted as they heard a snapping twig behind them. Rotating their torso, leaving their feet facing forward, Vure watched with delight as a small family of hedgehogs made their way through the bushes, sniffing out and plucking berries that hung low enough. “You’re not supposed to be out during the day little ones, I hope you aren’t sick.” Grabbing a handful of deep blue berries, Vure lowered their hand slowly. Carefully placing the back of their hand on the ground, they waited. The mother cautiously approached Vure, sniffing wildly around Vure. Tenderly, it stepped onto Vure, removing a berry, before scurrying back to her babies. Time and time again the Mother hedgehog removed berries from Vure’s hand. Eventually the mother became trusting and a bond was made. Vure picked up the mother slowly, stroking back her spines as they lifted her into their bodies embrace. The mother rolled over, exposing her belly, Vure took their chance and gently stroked across her furry underside. “There is no way Anodyne made this planet, it is far too nice.” Vure said looking around. Quiet squeaks ran around Vure’s feet as the babies cried for their mother. Smiling behind their mask, Vure put down the mother, watching as she re-grouped her babies, and they made their way deeper into the bushes. “I know Anodyne said to make impressions on these planets, but I don’t think he will notice if I just played with some animals for a bit.” Vure grinned greedily at the thought, they levitated above the bushes and started to tail the now fast-moving hedgehog family. “I wonder if I could become a god of animals. Spending my time protecting animals from hunters, and making sure there is enough food to go around. I could even keep balance among the herbivores and carnivores, making sure that…oof.” “Momma Hog, I think I will name you Susan. As for your babies, I will name all four of them Sue. Then when you start a family band it can be called. Susan four Sue. You can be a country band that sings songs about lesbians.” Vure rested their hands behind their head before rotating onto their back, still following the hedgehogs they looked upwards to bright blue sky. “You can tour the country, singing in barns to people wearing plaid. Causing trouble with the law everywhere you go as your concerts stay loud till the early hours of the morning. Then….Oof.” Vure tucked up, turning so they could look at the tree they had collided with. The sound of their collision spooking the hedgehogs to run off in another direction. “Sorry little hedgehogs, stay safe.” Vure looked ahead of the hedgehogs to a small hut that stuck out of the nearby tree line. Barely visible through the thick brush that surrounded it. “That looks crude, probably made by someone with limited tools” Vure started to float towards the structure, turning invisible as they went. Vure watched as the small family of hedgehogs made their way past the edge of the hut, disappearing into the treeline. Vure walked through the bushes, making their way to the edge of the wooden hut. Laying a hand across it they felt the coarse bark on the hut. “Hmmm.” Vure hummed as they rubbed their fingers together. “Feels odd after holding a soft little animal, almost tingles to the touch.” Vure floated into the trees, breaking through the thick low hanging branches revealing a community of small humanoid creatures. Stocky, short, fur covered creatures with a variety of mono to multi-coloured furs. Most of their faces were hidden behind masks, even though it seemed as if they were just doing daily routines, and not gathering for some form of event. Smaller children ran around as the adults tended to crops, and gardens filled with herbs. A few tables were scattered around, Cappies sat at them making salves, potions, and other medical elixirs. Vure smiled at the simple lives that laid out before them. A warmth grew in their soul as they continued to watch. “You are just the sweetest little things, I think I will make you my first point of contact. Then I can bring Light back here and we can spend the night sleeping in massive piles of fur.” Vure looped through the air with joy, disrupting the leaves on the trees, covering the small humanoids with a blanket of foliage. Some of them looking upwards. The largest of the humanoids stepped into the centre of the small village. “The trees grow restless, we shall make sure to bring them plenty of water this day. We owe all we have to nature, let us not take it for granted now we are abundant in resources.” The leader turned to retrieve two wooden buckets, making his way deep into the forest. “This is my chance.” Vure said, tailing the leader out of the prying eyes of the rest of the village. Vure watched carefully as the creature did its best to avoid harming the flora around him. With every step, more and more animals became aware of his presence, running over to him to greet him. Small groupings of rabbits bounced by his knees as a lonely doe walked by his side, licking his velvety white tipped black fur, to show affection as they made their way to the river. “Who are you, friend?” Vure asked, remaining invisible. The leader looked around, he checked his surroundings before resuming his walk. “You know it would be considered rude not to answer me.” Vure chuckled out as they floated just ahead of the leader. “Where are you hiding, voice?” The leader said calmly, making sure to maintain pace. “Well, I am not hiding, not really. I am right in front of you, you just can’t see me.” “You’re not hiding? I must be going blind.” The leader marched on, unfazed, and steady. “You are very calm, I could be hostile. Are you not afraid?” Vure asked, puzzled by the strange creature. “Why would I need to be scared, no one wants to harm a Cappy. Besides, I have friends looking over me.” Snapping his three large fingers together four large wolves appeared on the leader’s flanks. “These are just the ones that don’t mind being seen, there are plenty more watching my back, front, and side. You get the idea, strange hidden voice.” “Hmm, I think I am beginning to understand. You are a very interesting little species of…” “We are known as Cappies, you must be new around here. Everyone has heard of us.” Vure stood infront of the Cappy leader, removing their invisibility. Vure quickly found themselves surrounded by snapping jaws. Snarling as they waited for the command to kill. “My god you are, indescribable.” The Cappy leader said, struck with awe by Vure’s image. “Already declaring me as your god? That was quick.” Vure slowly started to turn invisible once again. “What are you, why are you here?” “I am just as you said, your god. I have come down from the heavens to offer my guidance and protection to all Cappies.” Vure finishing their sentence from complete invisibility. “Get your water, feed your trees. And let your people know Vure shall be guiding them from the shade of the forest.” Vure continued to watch over the Cappy population, helping in small ways where they could. Making herbs grow large, filling them with their medicinal properties. Guiding the strongest of animals to them for protection. Over the months they watched, they would on occasion appear for minutes at a time to interact with the Cappies. They would play with the children, allowing the parents time to rest. Sitting down with others, Vure helped them with their mask carving. Giving tips on how to get a much better quality. One-night Vure could not hold in their wants anymore, they flew down and made themselves visible. “I will re-appear tomorrow night for a whole night, this is a reward for you continued devotion. Let us have a party, let us experience together.” The Cappies cheered, all running around without direction. “Everyone, gather. We must plan our night carefully, come around and we shall plan.” The leader yelled as he beckoned his people in. They gathered close to one another, fidgeting with excitement. Plans were slowly made, Cappies peeling off from the crowd to fulfil the tasks they were given for the upcoming night. The next night came, and all the Cappies stood in wait. They wore their best masks, and made sure their fur was in perfect condition. All through the base of the trees were jars filled with glow bugs, giving the village a soft glow. Food was laid out over multiple tables, and in the centre a large empty circle of forest floor was kept clear. Leaves started to gather in the circle, at first in clumps, then they spread evenly over the space. Lifting from the ground, the leaves rotated individually creating a pattern of earthly colours before the awe struck Cappies. A large spire of leaves formed in the centre, slowly making the shape of Vure. They exploded outwards and all that was left behind was Vure. “Let us all enjoy this night, for tonight we let loose.” Everyone rushed Vure, laying their hands on them and crying their name. Vure floated above everyone, and with a wave of their hand parted the tree tops. With a window to the sky Vure rolled onto their back and drifted back to the ground staring upwards. Raising one hand, bending their fist into the shape of a gun. “Bang.” Vure said eagerly as the sky lit up with explosions of colours and strange patterns The Cappies were captivated, some took up instruments and began to play. Others danced to the colour spectacle that had been seen by Cappy eyes before this night. Meanwhile a few natives laid next to Vure, enjoying the night by relaxing in a joyous environment. Vure gazed around, noticing that those on the ground were all bruising thick leaves with their thumbs. Licking at the exposed moisture their pupils dilated, and their breath slowed. Vure took an unused leaf, following as the others did. As their body relaxed, Vure felt themselves fall limp. Looking up to the night sky, they let loose another firework from their finger tip. The explosion seemingly moving in slow motion as the sound reverberated in the air. The music had slowed, looking around everyone was dancing in what appeared to be slow motion. Chuckling, Vure laid back into the grass, enjoying the rest of the night with their followers. Come the morning Vure awoke in a pile of warm fur. Clawing their way out of a pile of Sleeping Cappies, Vure once again went invisible, making sure to keep mystery around their image by not appearing too often. Over the day they watched as everyone collected themselves, returning their small village back to its original state. From the corner of Vure’s eye, a Cappy came running into the camp, sprinting at full speed. “The traders are coming, everyone get out your supplies.” He yelled as he made his way into a small hut. Popping his head out for one moment he yelled again. “And …

The Iron Fist Of The Law

Light emerged from her cloaked form just outside of Bellude, the planet she decided would be her first target to gain faith on. She watched as the enormous space station that floated above the planet acted as a port for all the space fairing ships. The smaller single person crafts all seemed to fly beneath the station, docking in small specialized housings at the base. While all the rugged industrial craft all seemed to gather on the far side, where there appeared to be large store houses to store all their goods, goods that would later be vetted for travel down the large space elevator that attached at the base of the station, allowing inexpensive travel of heavy goods between the surface and space. Finally, the larger carriers that appeared to be people movers all docked on the nearest side to Light. Their dock had large towers, and vast areas for substantial amounts of people to waiting to board. Light continued to float and watch, admiring the different colored flames coming from the various ships. Blues, greens, reds, all due to the fuel their respective crafts used. Eventually she grew tired of watching them and decided to drift away, floating in the direction that some of the craft seemed to be flying off in. Drifting through space she gave herself some time to clear her mind. She thought about Vure as she floated far away from Bellude. As she was deep in thought, she failed to notice the overwhelming amount of debris that littered the space before her, her head colliding with a chunk of metal. “God dammit, why the hell is there a chunk of metal out here?” Light looked up, surprised. “Not a chunk of metal, a whole field of metal, and space crafts.” Pushing away the chunk she collided with, she flew outwards, getting a better view. “I assume this must have been a battle. It is immense.” Light said astounded. “I can’t believe that there could be this much destruction.” A frozen corpse floated by as she spoke. “And death. Yet there is still a whole planet that is functioning with massive space ports. Maybe this place is a little more interesting than I initially thought. I should…” Light trailed off as she noticed strange sparks coming from a distant wreckage. The sparks seemed consistent and unlike the flickering sparks that seemed to come from many of the larger wreckages. She flew through fragments and hulls, making her way through the corpses of the space crafts that were left to rot in space. Suddenly, she noticed a ship. One that looked to be in perfect condition, one that was significantly smaller than those she had flown through. It looked as a child compared to the vast size of those around her. A little dirty, but in perfect condition with the words: ‘The iron fist of the law is nothing more than a puddle under the torch of a salvager.’ Printed in large red letters upon the hull. Paint dripping from the words, it seemed as if it was written in haste without a professional’s hand. Light’s curiosity took a hold of her, she cloaked her form and moved in closer to see who was lurking. She grabbed onto the end of the derelict craft to allow her to turn into its hull quickly. But in her haste, she removed a chunk of the broken ship. The constant sparking stopped and Light watched as a man in a fabric and glass suit looked up at the chunk that was now floating across his eye line. The man released his plasma torch, letting it float. He held down a small button on his right arm. “Andrew, do you have eyes up?” “I assume you mean the rogue part of the ship that just detached?” Andrew replied over the crackling intercom which linked the two men to each other. “That is exactly what I am referring to, I caught it out of the corner of my eye. What caused it?” “Well Mike, It was in my line of sight as it happened, just broke off and started drifting.” “This is not a planet, there is no gravity or other force that can rip off chunks of metal. Something had to remove it.” “Well according to the ships sensors there was nothing cloaked, I am looking back on the replay and it just ripped off. Maybe a small fast-moving piece of debris collided with it?” Mike continued to survey his surroundings, cautious of what could be lurking. “Keep me updated, I want all ship sensors running at maximum efficiency.” Mike said with a wobble of fear in his throat. “I can max out our tools here on the ship, but that will make us an easy mark for anyone who is looking.” “Just do it, I have the feeling that we are not alone anymore, I am nearly through here. Just give me five minutes.” Mike went back to cutting into the reinforced metals with his plasma cutter, while Andrew started to turn all the sensors up from his console on their space craft. “Heat detection, max. Radiation diffuser, max. Cloak detection, max.” Andrew stropped for a moment as his monitor glitched, an image of a human appeared for a moment under the cloak detection screen. “Mike, we may have company.” Without stopping his welding Mike quickly switched his intercom back on. “What do you mean, may have?” “Well I was maxing everything out and once I turned cloak detection up I saw a brief image of a person on my monitors. But it disappeared nearly instantly.” “Must be a ghost in the machine, no one has cloaking in a suit that could evade our ships scanners.” Mike said as he attempted to speed up his cutting. “Unless they came from outside our solar system, maybe one of the Leviathan Dominion personal? Our government has been pushing for membership.” Mike broke through the plating he had been cutting, the power of his torch forcing the chunk of metal inwards. “If it is, we should be fine, no way someone of that much significance would bother with low key illegal salvage. Probably just make note of the crime and move on.” Mike moved through the hole he forged, and into the large derelict craft. Turning on his head lamp, he grinned. “This is what we came for.” Mike said as he looked over a room filled with cargo containers marked with the logo from the Bellude government. “Mike, I need you to stare at the locks on those crates. Isn’t it lovely how our government is kind enough to use different locks for various levels of security risks on their products?” Mike knelt and lowered his head to the same level as the crates, giving Andrew a clear view of the frontal locks through his head cam. “You are the biggest nerd, man. Who even knows that kind of information?” Andrew looked carefully at the colour and design of the lock, his eyes widening as he smiled uncontrollably. “You need to be very careful with those crates, we are dealing with high grade weaponry. Judging by the case sizes and shapes, those are explosives. Not small ones either, we are talking ship killers.” Mike took a step back from the case that lay before him. “Are we talking big crafts, or just shitty little crafts like ours?” Mike held his breath as he awaited a response. “Nah nothing significant, I just wanted to make you nervous. Probably just EMP bombs for dispersing fighters from around the larger crafts.” Breathing again Mike looked around the room, dozens of cases laid before him, all carefully packed into shelves. “I hate to bunk your current theory, but there is no way we would transport bombs this way. It is too inefficient. To fully stock a ship this size it would take hundreds of rooms twice this size. We are dealing with something else. We need an expert’s eye.” Mike recoiled as he suffered the feedback of Andrew slamming his fist against the main console. “Fine. We take one now and go see that crazy man. But as soon as we know what we have we are leaving. I hate that maniac, he is into a lot of dark things that scare me.” Mike laughed as he retrieved the closest case, being extra careful as he moved back to his space craft to be re-united with Andrew. Standing in the small decompression chamber he forced the crate to the ground as air was regulated and gravity was restored to the room. He felt gravity drag his feet to the hard metal floors as Andrew regulated the room. Mike went to move the crate but struggled to lift it from the floor. Placing it back down he went back on the intercom. “Andrew, I need you here, this thing is a lot heavier than I initially thought.” “On my way, let me just power down some of our equipment. I would like to get off the radar.” Andrew said hastily as the sounds of switches made their way through the intercom. Mike took his time in removing his helmet and slowly climbing out of his suit. Racking it away in one of the many hidden cupboards that lined the walls of Mike’s space craft. He ran his hand through his thick, greasy, black hair. He stopped as he reached the base of his skull, he was frozen as he stared out of one of the small round windows on the side of his ship. Outside, Light floated staring in through the window. She moved closer, her darkened eyes blended into the dark corpse paint that surrounded her eyes. Her pale skin gave off a glow as the nearby stars light dappled through the carnage around her. She walked through the vacuum of space, unblinking as she stared at Mike. Her image dulling as she stepped out of the light and into the shade of the nearby wreckage. The similar unblinking stare of Mike was interrupted as Andrew opened the heavy door to the decompression room. Mike’s gaze turned to Andrew with a look of horror on his face, before returning to the window. “You okay Mike?” Andrew asked as Mike wandered towards the window cautiously. He peered out the edges of the window checking the surroundings. “I saw a woman.” Mike said as he continued to peer out the window. “She had black sunken in eyes and pale skin. Her head was adorned with a golden veil, and… and she was walking towards me.” “Alright buddy, let’s get you out of this chamber and into one that has had less contact with that box. It might be something biological.” Andrew grabbed Mike by his shoulders and lead him out of the room, leaving the box in the decompression chamber to sit alone. “I can tell you with certainty that she was there.” Mike insisted as he ran to the nearest window. “Maybe it was a corpse that was floating from the battle? There are a lot of corpses floating around still. Hell, I hit a couple flying us to this site.” “She was not a corpse, she fucking walked towards me.” Mike slammed his fist against a nearby wall as he started to pace around the room they stood in. His mind overclocking as he tugged at every synapse of his brain to find an explanation needed to calm himself. “I have it.” He yelled. “It must have been the person from the Leviathan Dominion, the one that appeared on your scanners. I mean we know nothing about them really, other than their stupid rules for traveling outside our home solar system.” “Yeah… that makes perfect sense. Because the dominion are TOTALLY advanced enough to have someone walk through space with no suit.” Andrew started to walk back towards the cockpit. “I am going to get us under way, you keep a look out for that Dominion member. Make …
